DESCRIPTION:Outdoors weather permitting \nNo Cover \n$9 Minimum Purchase \nPlease tip the artists! \nHenry Cooper \nHenry Cooper is in love\, in love with a sound\, a high-water-mark of blues guitar tone that had been set by the likes of Elmore James\, Earl Hooker\, Robert Nighthawk and Hop Wilson. It is clear from his newest release\, “Slide Man”\, that it is influence\, not imitation\, that he has learned from the blues masters. He has taken to heart the importance of keeping things uncluttered and of driving straight down the middle of the groove until the last note has faded. \nThe slide into the blues began for Henry at the age of 16\, while he was working at the Eugene (OR) Hotel as a busboy. It was while listening to a local radio station that he heard The Paul Butterfield Band playing “The Work Song” off of “East West”. Henry recalls\, “I heard that amplified harp and thought “My God! What’s that sound? It was amazing\, I’d never heard anything like it.” \nHenry began buying Blues records – one of the first ones he bought was “Fathers and Sons”\, which featured (among others) Paul Butterfield and Muddy Waters. Living in Eugene\, Cooper was surrounded by some of the best Northwest harmonica players: Curtis Salgado (with his band the Nighthawks)\, Bill Rhoades\, and Mike Mother. Henry checked them out\, picked their brains and got turned on to Little Walter and other blues musicians. By age 19\, he made his first recording as a harp player\, a 45 with his friend Chris Coltraine. \nAfter finding a lap steel guitar at a pawn shop\, Henry began using the licks he knew on the harmonica and applying them to the guitar as well as the sounds he’d heard from Elmore James\, Muddy Waters and Albert Collins. By the age of 22\, he was playing guitar in his first band Los Explorers. Even though he was living in Eugene\, a small college town\, there was a thriving blues scene and the musicians were always happy to offer their knowledge openly to an eager guitar player. \nAfter a few different bands\, Henry met Boyd Small and Andy Strange and\, along with former Los Explorers band-mate John Barley\, they formed Los Falcons. In 1987 Los Falcons was booked into a New Year’s Eve show with Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. The band learned a bunch of Jay’s tunes for the show and during sound check\, Jay heard them play and said\, “I’m taking you boys to Europe with me!” When the tour ended Henry moved to Portland and started several other bands which included: Henry and the Hamhawks and one of Portland\, Oregon’s favorite trios\, The Terraplanes. \nHenry’s relationship with Burnside Records began in the early 90’s when he and his wife Anne moved to Seattle and Henry was introduced to a singer named Duffy Bishop\, who was looking for a blues guitarist for her new band. Little did Henry know that The Duffy Bishop Band would take him on a five year ride as one of the hottest blues bands in the Northwest. \nThe Duffy Bishop Band along with Cooper on guitar recorded two CD’s for Burnside\, “Bottled Oddities” and “Back To The Bone”\, before he decided that it was time for him to fly solo. Devoting most of 1997 to writing and recording\, “Baby Please” was released on his own label\, High Action Records\, in May of 1998. Being Cooper’s first solo effort\, with limited distribution\, “Baby Please” sold over two thousand copies and made several favorite lists from critics and fans alike. It made Real Blues top 100 CD’s of 1998 as well as winning one of their four awards for “Best Pacific Northwest Blues CD Releases”. Henry also shared Real Blues’ “Best Slide Blues Guitarist in North America” award that year. \nInfluences:\nElmore James\, Muddy Waters\, Albert Collins\, Earl Hooker\, Robert Nighthawk and Hop Wilson and more.

Add to the mix his exceptional vocals\, and in Ty Curtis\, you’ve found a classy performer that has ignited an exciting Blues career and a major Blues star in the making.“Ty Curtis is a triple threat\, since he is the band’s lead singer\, as well as the primary composer of their material\, and thirdly he’s a sonically incendiary\, string-shredding electric guitar player” (Blues Rock Review). Ty has been winning awards for his vocals and musicianship for the last 10 years. In 2009 his raw soulful version of 5 Long Years by Eddie Boyd captivated the audience and earned the band 2nd place in The International Blues Challenge and lead to performances at The Montreal Jazz Festival in Canada and the St John Blues Festival USVI. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHis first live music experience was Silverchair at the LB Day Amphitheater in Salem Oregon where Curtis grew up. “It was their performance and musicianship that made me want to play guitar and sing” he recalls “I wanted to rock out like them” and with that inspiration ingrained\, Ty asked his parents for a guitar which he never let go of. “It was this kid’s Toy Western guitar that my parents found at a garage sale\, the strings were way off the fretboard” he laughs  “I played that thing until my fingers bled” From the age of sixteen\, Ty started showing up at local clubs and playing at any blues jam he could find. It wasn’t long before he was winning over admirers and attracting a large fan base in the Northwest. With each subsequent album release Ty’s reputation continued to grow establishing him as one of the torch bearers in a new generation of Blues. The band competed in the Journey to Memphis in Portland through the Cascade Blues Association and won giving him the chance to perform on the National stage. It was there in Memphis that Ty met David Z which led to him producing the third album ‘Cross That Line’. \n​ \nAfter a move to Austin Texas Ty decided to pursue a musical relationship with Steve Miller Band’s guitarist Jacob Petersen. That pairing led to album releases “Ty Curtis” and “Water Under The Bridge” where both albums received high praise and rave reviews. “His ability to think outside the box\, and blend his influences from other genres of music fit perfectly amongst the assortment of true blues rock style. It was named the Winner in the Blues Category of the 2013 UK Songwriting Contest\, and The 12 videos from the DVD have recently surpassed the two-million-hit milestone on YouTube! The band was also awarded Best New Act by the Cascade Blues Association. \nBilly D’s life experience has given him the strength to write his brand of “Bluzy Rock” with a passion that only comes from living it. Heavily influenced by Chicago blues\, Rock & Roll\, and “Backbeat Roots” music of all types\, his songs reflect the tough lessons of his past and show his love for Mother Blues and her first-born\, Rock & Roll. \nBorn on the south side of Chicago\, Billy Desmond grew up surrounded by the Blues and early Rock & Roll— a powerful combination. He started playing professionally at the age of fourteen\, primarily for teen dances and parties; and by eighteen\, he was sneaking into the blues clubs of Chicago to hear such greats as Muddy Waters\, Junior Wells\, Buddy Guy\, and James Cotton. Within a few years\, Billy would be working with blues legends Junior Wells\, Big Time Sarah\, and Detroit Junior. \nBy the late ‘70s\, he had formed his first band\, Skid City Blues Band\, taking on the roles of singer\, guitarist\, and songwriter. After years of touring the Midwest\, Billy moved to Los Angeles in 1984\, studying with Blues great Tony Matthews\, guitarist for Little Richard and Ray Charles. He spent half of the next year playing behind\, Don “Sugar Cane” Harris\, perhaps the world’s greatest blues violinist. \nIn the mid-’90s\, Billy moved to Santa Fe\, and began focusing on writing and playing his original songs. Within the year\, Billy D and the Hoodoos were formed. \nIn 2003\, KTAO voted his song She’s the One the number one song by a regional artist. KTAO hosts the Annual Solar Fest in New Mexico and that same year Billy and the band opened the Fest for Los Lonely Boys and Robert Cray. After several more successful years in New Mexico\, Billy left the southwest for Oregon in early 2010. His first CD\, Somethin’s Wrong has received outstanding reviews and accolades and has been embraced by the Portland music community as well as the rest of the U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe.

Captivating audiences and presenting himself as someone who has a lot of depth in the various soundscapes of American music\, Ben is gaining fans all over the world who love his playing\, singing\, songs\, and stage performance. \n   His original music blends Soul\, Delta-Blues\, Rockabilly\, Jazz\, and Funk into a Roots Stew. Influenced heavily by his parents record collection\, from Al Green to Alice Cooper\, Teddy Pendergrass to Marshall Tucker\, at a young age Ben began investigating Blues and it’s history. Starting with B.B. King and going through the various regions and time periods\, he is inspired and influenced by historical figures like Muddy Waters\, Mississippi Fred McDowell\, Robert Johnson\, Big Bill Broonzy\, and Skip James to name a few. Ben spent his college years studying Jazz Guitar at the University of Oregon as well as classical music while also playing in the Celtic Folk ensemble and Mariachi group on campus. He is well versed in a lot of musical styles that all contribute to the unique sound of his originals. \n   As a performer Ben looks to the greats for inspiration and is always striving to connect with the audience through his music and stories. He also has an interesting arsenal of guitars playing resophonic guitars and homemade cigar box guitars. More important than the visual appeal Ben has an amazing way of making these guitars sound\, often bringing audiences to tears with his slide playing. \n   Ben Rice has been a growing talent in the NW\, winning awards for his singing\, guitar work\, writing\, and performing. He started playing guitar at age 12\, and spent his teen years playing in various suburban garage and bar-bands. After relocating to the PNW\, he continued playing in bars\, service clubs\, and road bands both regional and national. Today he plays with the Concrete Delta and Skip Jones. \nSkip & his group\, The Spirit of New Orleans\, play a smattering of the great rhythm and blues hits of the ’50s and ’60s\, as well as some great pop & rock organ classics of the ’60s and ’70’s. Add to that a bonifide New Orleans piano boogie-woogie and the party follows! \nOver the last 20 years\, frontman Skip Jones has enjoyed working with such bands as: The Coasters\, The Drifters\, The Platters\, Joe Houston & Bo Diddley. He toured with the great Canned Heat in 1985-86 holding down Larry Taylor’s bass position. Skip has worked with The Etouffee Band\, James Thornbury\, James Bradshaw and Henry Vestine extensively. Skip can be seen performing at least 4 times a week in Eugene at the jams and with his own band The Spirit of New Orleans. He’s taken over for the Rooster Man hosting Eugene’s longest running Blues Jam. \n
