This band actually includes no less than 3 (Count ‘em) “Oregon Musical Hall Of Fame Inductees,” and it is expected to be a blow-out evening in Eugene. When was the last time that a stage in Eugene was graced WITH THREE… “MUSIC HALL OF FAMER’S” all at once??
This gig will be on Lloyd Jones’ birthday, so we expect to surprise him with a “Happy Birthday song to him, and possibly a lil’ surprise, when it’s nearly always Lloyd singing that to others in the crowd.”
Lloyd partly wanted to expand his footprint back into the south valley again after nearly a decade, to bring his brand new music, and to ask help raising some production-funds to help him record his newest work.for a new Album!
A significant body of Lloyd’s newest-musical-creations will be presented to the public during this event at Mac’s in Eugene.
Lloyd has played Eugene many times in the past, including the Eugene Celebration, The Wow Hall, and other area venues as a staple. Jones enjoyed meet-ups with Curtis Salgato here back in the old-days. Then Salgato went to Portland and hooked-up with others who regularly played Eugene, such as Robert Cray, Paul Delay, Linda Hornbuckle and others, all collaborators of Lloyd Jones at varying times.
SO, WHO EXACTLY IS LLOYD JONES BAND?
LLOYD JONES is a guitar player extraordinaire, singer, songwriter, musical collaborator from Portland. He’s an Oregon Music Hall Of Fame Inductee and many-times ground-zero at the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland and played numerous times at the Eugene Celebration. As a Portland roots artist, Lloyd has recorded six critically acclaimed albums, toured internationally, and racked up dozens of major awards and accolades. He’s a relentless road dog, hitting festival stages, Delbert McClinton’s annual Sandy Beach Cruises (he’s been a regular on six winter cruises), and clubs all across the land to enthusiastic crowds who can’t get enough of his swampy blues, his back-porch picking, his serious-as-anthrax funk, soul, roadhouse two-beats, and old-school rhythm and blues. Yet he may be “the most invisible, best-kept roots/blues/Americana secret on the contemporary scene” in Oregon, says Robert Cray.

LOUIS PAIN was dubbed “KING LOUIE PAIN, Portland’s Boss Of The B-3” by The Portland, Oregonian and is himself, also, an Oregon Music Hall of Fame Inductee for his outstanding work and steady contributions. When called upon, Louis is a dynamic soloist, but he specializes in the subtle art of making the musicians and vocalists he works with “sound their best.” For him, the song’s the thing, not showing off, and that’s why he’s always in demand with his peers.
It’s been that way since Louis started playing professionally in his hometown of San Francisco back in 1970. He worked with some of the top musicians in the Bay Area in a variety of genres, including funk guitarist Bruce Conte (Tower of Power), jazz saxophonist Jules Broussard (Ray Charles, Santana), gospel vocalist Dorothy Morrison (“Oh, Happy Day”), and the late rock/jazz saxophonist Cornelius Bumpus (Doobie Bros & Steely Dan). Since moving to Portland in ‘86, Louis has continued the trend, working regularly with top Portland blues/soul artists including the late, great Paul deLay and Linda Hornbuckle, Curtis Salgado, LaRhonda Steele, Lloyd Jones, Andy Stokes, and Lisa Mann, as well as with jazz musicians Mel Brown, Thara Memory, Renato Caranto, Dan Faehnle, and Dan Balmer. Louis also is the “first call” organist to back visiting musical legends, who have included Bernard “Pretty” Purdie,” Phil Upchurch, Martha Reeves (3 times), the Shirelles, and now-departed musical giants Solomon Burke, Howard Tate, and Bo Diddley. In the recording studio, Louis has played on and/or produced or co-produced numerous CDs and received 4-star raves from prestigious Downbeat Magazine.

CARLTON JACKSON on drums, is yet another Oregon Music Hall of Fame Inductee on stage this night. Jackson is well known on the Portland music circuit, and Lloyd says that everyone in northwest music knows he’s a beast at the trap-set and excellent with Jones’ new body of work, which is being introduced to Eugene at Mac’s Vet’s/Club. Jackson has been a lifelong resident of Portland, a drummer extraordinaire and host of The Message Sunday evenings from 7-10pm on KMHD.

BEN JONES will by playing the Bass, with Lloyd this evening, and he’s a “Northwest Bass Powerhouse” according to Base Musician Magazine. This dynamic musician has been a Bassist and Musical Director for over 35 years, having toured or recorded with The Neville Brothers, Liv Warfield, Anita Baker and Jennifer Batten (to name just a few on his long and impressive list) as well as backed up Esperanza Spaulding in Portland, laid down the groove for local Sax strongman Patrick Lamb… and yet he is equally as comfortable representing at the TC Electronics booth at NAMM and is always on the move.
